MGH Lab of Computer Science

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Lab of Computer Science (LCS) provides clinical and research information systems support to the hospital, and research in the application of computer technology in medical record systems, physician workstations, clinical problem solving, expert systems in medical diagnosis, knowledge management, and clinical research. A few of their current projects are listed below.

  • CRP - The Clinical Research Program

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Clinical Research Program (CRP) was established in 1995 to improve the environment for clinical investigation at MGH. LCS staffs the Information Management Unit for CRP, helping to formulate strategic direction in information systems supporting clinical research.

  • Oncall - Structured Dictation

Shifting the burden to natural language processing
Many EHR's store clinical notes in unstructured, flat text. Oncall is set up to store clinical information in structured data fields. Structured data can be used for decision support, and enables the healthcare provider to view the chronology of comment text based on a diagnosis, and provides disease management reminders based on medications, lab tests performed, patient allergies, and physical exam items performed.

Training for Oncall can be done online "on your time" or you can arrange for classroom training.

  • Using decision support to help explain clinical manifestations of disease

DXplain, a decision support system developed at the Laboratory of Computer Science at the Massachusetts General Hospital, has the characteristics of both an electronic medical textbook and a medical reference system.

  • FastTrack - A hyperlipidemia management system

DXplain, a decision support system developed at the Laboratory of Computer Science at the Massachusetts General Hospital, has the characteristics of both an electronic medical textbook and a medical reference system.

  • i2b2 - Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside

The i2b2 is A national center for Biomedical computing. The MGH LCS lists contacts for more information on this exciting project.

From the i2b2 website: "i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) is an NIH-funded National Center for Biomedical Computing based at Partners HealthCare System. The i2b2 Center is developing a scalable informatics framework that will enable clinical researchers to use existing clinical data for discovery research and, when combined with IRB-approved genomic data, facilitate the design of targeted therapies for individual patients with diseases having genetic origins. This platform currently enjoys wide international adoption by the CTSA network, academic health centers, and industry. i2b2 is funded as a cooperative agreement with the National Institutes of Health."

iHealthSpace - Redefining patient health literacy through community and communication
Practice infrastructure is evolving to support a new model of health care as visit-based care proves inadequate to meet patients’ continuous health needs. Efforts to engage patients at home include patient portals which provide patients with the ability to schedule appointments, request prescriptions refills and in a growing number of cases, message their provider and view elements of their medical record.

  • iHealthSpace

iHealthSpace is a new model of care that redefines patient health literacy through community and communication. It's designed to optimally support the patient in assessing their current state of health, managing problems, and preventing future medical complications.
